Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
If your air conditioner is running but the house is not getting cooler, there are several possible causes. Start with a few safe checks: make sure the thermostat is set to COOL with a temperature below the room temperature, confirm that supply vents and return grilles are not blocked, and inspect the air filter. A heavily clogged filter can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance.
Other causes may include a dirty indoor or outdoor coil, a failed outdoor fan or compressor component, frozen evaporator coil, condensate safety switch, control issue, or a refrigerant leak. Low refrigerant is not a normal maintenance condition; if the system is low, the underlying cause needs to be identified rather than simply adding refrigerant.
If you notice ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, turn cooling off and arrange service. If the outdoor unit is not running, the system repeatedly trips a breaker, or airflow is weak despite a clean filter, professional diagnosis is recommended. Our technicians can identify the actual fault and explain repair options before unnecessary parts are replaced.
